The EU - funded LIFE ZEROSILIBRINE project has achieved a major breakthrough by developing a process to extract high - purity sodium sulphate from silica production waste. Silica manufacturing typically generates large volumes of effluent containing sodium sulphate, which is often discarded as a waste product. The ZEROSILIBRINE technology uses a combination of filtration and crystallization to recover 100% of the water from the effluent and produce commercial - grade sodium sulphate with a purity of 99.5%. The project, which involves 12 partners across Europe, is currently being scaled up for industrial use, with the first commercial plant set to open in Germany in 2026.
